Gait Analysis

WHAT IS IT AND WHY DO YOU NEED IT?

Running and hiking are a fantastic way to improve cardiovascular fitness, reduce stress and improve overall health. However, it is important to make sure that you are running and walking with the correct form and stride. That's where gait analysis comes in.

Gait analysis is the process of assessing how you walk or run, and is often performed by a qualified professional, such as a podiatrist or physical therapist. They will watch you run or walk, or use specialized equipment such as a treadmill and cameras to record your movement. This analysis can identify any issues with your gait, such as overpronation, underpronation, or supination.

Overpronation occurs when your foot rolls inwards excessively as you land, putting strain on your ankle and knee joints. Underpronation, also known as supination, is the opposite, where your foot rolls outwards, causing stress on the outer edge of the foot. Neutral pronation is when the foot rolls inward slightly, but not too much.

By analyzing your gait, professionals can identify any biomechanical issues and make recommendations for improving your running form. This may involve prescribing orthotics or recommending exercises to strengthen specific muscles.
